The Global Talent visa is for people aged 18 or over who are recognised as leaders or potential leaders in academia and research, arts and culture, or digital technology.
Answer a few quick questions and our immigration team will come back with an initial view.
The route does not generally require employer sponsorship or a job offer and can provide a path to settlement after three or five years, depending on the field and endorsement category.
Global Talent assesses the applicant’s achievements, professional standing and future potential rather than tying their immigration status to a particular employer.
Visa holders can work as employees, be self-employed, establish or direct a company, undertake voluntary work and change employment without obtaining permission from the Home Office. They cannot work as professional sportspersons, including as sports coaches, and they do not normally have access to public funds.
Most applicants complete two stages:
The relevant endorsing body makes the specialist assessment of whether the applicant satisfies the Exceptional Talent or Exceptional Promise criteria. The Home Office remains responsible for the immigration application, including validity, suitability and other visa requirements.
Applicants who are named winners of a prize specifically listed in Appendix Global Talent: Prestigious Prizes can apply directly for the visa without obtaining an endorsement.
Two significant changes expanded the route in 2026.
On 1 July 2026, a dedicated design industry pathway was added within the arts and culture category. Applications are submitted through Arts Council England and assessed by the Design Business Association. Applicants can qualify as either Exceptional Talent or Exceptional Promise.
On 6 August 2026, the UK Research and Innovation endorsed-funder pathway was expanded to include more than 100 UK research-intensive businesses as approved employing or hosting organisations.
This expansion allows eligible researchers to work for an approved business on a qualifying research project funded through an endorsed research and innovation funder. Inclusion of the business on the approved list is not sufficient by itself: the employment, grant, funding and research requirements must also be met.
The route may be available to leaders and potential leaders working in:
The precise criteria vary significantly between fields and pathways. Not every field offers both Exceptional Talent and Exceptional Promise, and the evidence required for an academic researcher will be very different from that required for a digital technology specialist or designer.
There is no English-language, maintenance-funds or minimum-salary requirement at the initial visa stage. English-language and Knowledge of Life in the UK requirements apply later when applying for settlement.
Academics and researchers may qualify through one of four endorsement pathways:
The appointment, fellowship and endorsed-funder pathways provide fast-track endorsement. They do not remove the endorsement requirement.
Applicants who do not qualify through one of the fast-track pathways may still apply through peer review if they can demonstrate Exceptional Talent or Exceptional Promise in their academic or research field.
Generally, no. Global Talent is not tied to a sponsoring employer, and no Certificate of Sponsorship is required.
However, some academic and research fast-track pathways are based on an eligible job offer, fellowship or funded research position. In those cases, the appointment or project is part of the endorsement criteria even though the employer is not sponsoring the visa under the Skilled Worker system.
Once the visa is granted, you can normally work for any employer, be self-employed, become a company director or change roles without making a new immigration application. Work as a professional sportsperson or sports coach is not permitted.
For extension and settlement applications, you must normally show that you have earned money in the UK in the field connected to your endorsement or eligible prize.
Exceptional Talent is generally for applicants who are already recognised as leaders in their field. Exceptional Promise is for applicants who demonstrate the potential to become leaders.
Exceptional Promise is not determined simply by age or job title. The endorsing body considers the applicant’s career stage, achievements, recognition, impact and future trajectory under its published criteria.
The available categories also vary by field. For example, film and television endorsement is available under Exceptional Talent only, while digital technology, design and many other arts and culture pathways allow applications under either category.
Only if you are the named winner of a prize specifically listed in Appendix Global Talent: Prestigious Prizes.
A prize from the same organisation as a listed prize is not enough. The exact prize must appear on the official list, and the applicant must normally be individually named as a winner.
Eligible fellowships, senior academic appointments and qualifying research grants provide fast-track endorsement, but they do not remove the endorsement stage.
Potentially. The UKRI endorsed-funder pathway was expanded on 6 August 2026 to include more than 100 research-intensive UK businesses as approved employing or hosting organisations.
The applicant must still be working on an eligible grant from an endorsed funder. The current requirements normally include:
The employer’s inclusion on the approved organisation list does not automatically make every researcher or project eligible.
The design industry pathway is for designers who can demonstrate outstanding professional work that has been applied, published, distributed or exhibited internationally.
Applicants must normally show regular professional engagement in the field during the preceding five years. Exceptional Talent applicants require a substantial record of work, while Exceptional Promise applicants require a developing record appropriate to their career stage.
Applications are assessed by the Design Business Association on behalf of Arts Council England. The evidence normally includes three recommendation letters, a CV and up to 10 pieces of supporting evidence.
Official endorsement decision times vary by pathway:
After endorsement, a visa decision usually takes approximately three weeks for an overseas application or eight weeks for an application made inside the UK. Faster services may be available.
Evidence collection and preparation can take considerably longer than the official decision period, particularly where recommendation letters or evidence from third parties are required.
Applicants can choose a period of permission of up to five years at a time. There is no overall maximum period on the route, and the visa can be extended repeatedly if the extension requirements are met.
Choosing a shorter initial period may reduce the Immigration Health Surcharge, but the intended settlement date and the cost of a later extension should also be considered.
The main applicant may qualify for settlement after three years if they:
Applicants endorsed under the Exceptional Promise criteria by Arts Council England or Tech Nation normally require five years.
Settlement also requires continuous residence, qualifying earnings in the relevant field, the Life in the UK Test and the applicable English-language requirement. For settlement applications made before 26 March 2027, the English requirement is normally B1 in speaking and listening. For applications made on or after that date, it increases to B2, unless an exemption applies.
