Dr Ezgi Bezirhan Arikan had built a career spanning both academia and the private sector in Turkey and had achieved the title of Associate Professor in Environmental Engineering and Science.
When she began considering an international move with her family, the UK Global Talent route offered an opportunity to return her career more fully towards academia.
There was one obvious difficulty: she had never lived or studied in Britain and did not have an established UK academic network.
Instead of seeing that as a barrier, Dr Arikan began researching academics whose work genuinely connected with her own. She identified around 18 professors and approached those whose research was most relevant.
The response was extremely encouraging. She secured three recommendation letters and, importantly, some of those initial conversations developed into genuine academic relationships.
Her Global Talent application was successful, allowing her and her family to relocate to the UK.
Within weeks of arriving, she was already discussing research ideas and collaborating with UK academics.
What began as part of an immigration application therefore became something much bigger: the start of a new professional network and a new chapter in her academic career.
Her experience has a simple message for other academics considering the same route: do not assume that a lack of existing UK connections means the opportunity is closed to you. Sometimes the first connection begins simply by reaching out.
