Dr Cagri Kutlu, a mechanical engineering researcher specialising in sustainable energy, wanted greater flexibility to develop his academic career in the UK. We prepared his Global Talent endorsement application under Exceptional Promise, drawing on his research contribution, academic activities and future plans. The application was approved, followed by his Global Talent visa. This successful application came after an earlier submission he had prepared himself was refused.

From Mechanical Engineering to Sustainable Energy Research

Cagri studied mechanical engineering at Çukurova University and began his academic career as a research assistant in Türkiye. A scholarship later enabled him to pursue a PhD in Sustainable Energy Technologies at the University of Nottingham.

After completing his doctorate, he continued as a research fellow, working on research projects before progressing to a university lecturer role. His record included publications, citations, journal peer review and editorial board membership.

By the time he explored Global Talent, he had approximately 20 publications and around 400 citations. Those figures formed part of the record, alongside the substance of his research and his wider academic activities.

Seeking Greater Freedom in His Academic Career

Cagri’s research work involved fixed-term projects. Under Skilled Worker, changes between projects or employers could mean further immigration arrangements, adding administration and uncertainty to his career planning.

He wanted greater flexibility to develop his academic work without relying on a single sponsoring employer. Global Talent appealed to him as a route that could support those longer-term plans.

He initially prepared the endorsement application himself, drawing on his CV and a supporting letter from his academic supervisor. He expected his research experience and achievements to make the strength of his profile clear. The application was refused.

Preparing a New Application After the Refusal

The refusal feedback raised the absence of a patent and an international award. That left Cagri unsure whether it was worth applying again.

We reviewed the earlier submission and his wider academic record. Our assessment focused on whether the evidence supported an Exceptional Promise application and how that evidence had been explained. We identified a basis for preparing a new application using his existing achievements and future potential.

The revised personal statement connected his academic development, research contribution and future plans. We also helped develop a more detailed reference letter explaining his work and potential to become a leader in his field.

The application needed to make the relevance of the evidence clear. Listing publications and positions alone did not fully explain what his research contributed or how his career was progressing.

Presenting His Research Contribution and Future Potential

We presented Cagri’s publications in context, addressing their contribution, the journals in which they appeared and the citations they had received. His peer-review work and editorial board involvement added further context to his participation in the academic community.

We brought those elements together with his research experience and future plans. This gave the second application a clearer explanation of why his record supported recognition under Exceptional Promise.

Endorsement Approval and the Global Talent Visa

His endorsement application was approved. We then proceeded with the visa application, and he obtained his Global Talent visa.

For Cagri, the result supported a more flexible academic future in the UK. It also resolved the uncertainty created by the earlier refusal.

His experience illustrates the value of reviewing an unsuccessful application alongside the full professional record. In this case, a clearer explanation of the existing evidence and its relevance to Exceptional Promise helped support a successful second submission.
